Twisted Toyfare Theatre

Twisted Mego Theater – Exploring the Hilarious World of Mego Toys

In the Late 1990’s, ToyFare magazine introduced a new comic strip that started off as “Twisted Mego Theater” and was later renamed to “Twisted ToyFare Theater”.  This live action comic strip took a hilarious and irreverent look at the world of our toys through photography, taking well known Mego characters and putting them in  often ridiculous situations.  The comic strip was a huge hit with fans and quickly became one of the most popular features of the ToyFare magazine.

The humor of Twisted Mego Theater was a unique take on the world of toys, and was unlike anything that had been seen before with a unique blend of pop-cultrure references and original storytelling.  The comic strip was filled with nonsensical humor, taking many of the classic Mego characters that we all know and love and putting them in hilarious and absurd situations.  Whether it was a battle between Spiderman and Dr. Octopus, or Dr Doom (custom by Charlie Flatt), or a parody of Super Villain Jeopardy, Twisted Mego Theater  was entertaining and always hilarious.

In addition to its humor, Twisted Mego Theater was also known for its creative and innovative sets and word balloons. The comic strip was beautifully photo-played and the artists behind it brought a unique and imaginative touch to each issue.  The attention to sets, pose-ability and story lines are a testament to the creativity of the talent behind it.  It was not just a comic strip, but a window into the imagination and a true masterpiece of the comic strip genre

Despite its popularity, Twisted Mego Theater was not without its controversy.  Some people found the humor in the comic strip to be inappropriate and there were even concerns that it was sending the wrong message to children.  Despite these concerns, Twisted Mego Theater and then Twisted ToyFare Theater continued to be one of the most popular features of ToyFare magazine, who's legacy continues to live on today.

As it's popularity grew, Twisted Mego Theater seeded the inspiration behind Robot Chicken - an animated TV series created by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich - who saw the potential for using toys as characters in a comedic stop-motion show and began developing the idea for Robot Chicken, which went on to become a cultural phenomenon, winning numerous awards, including multiple Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program.

So why not take a trip down memory lane and explore Twisted ToyFare Theater for yourself?  With its hilarious humor and imaginative photo artwork, it is a true classic of the comic strip genre and a testament to the creativity and talent of the artists and  Mego figures behind it.  Whether you’re a Mego fan, a fan of toys or just appreciate absurd and often ridiculous humor, Twisted Toyfare Theater is a must-read.  So, grab a copy (available at comic shops, Amazon and ebay) and enjoy the twisted world of toys today!
